Sloog F.A.Q.

What is Sloog?

Sloog is a bookmarking service for Second Life residents. It allows users to save favourite places and avatars and search for them later, both in-world with a simple plug-in (HUD) or via web browser at www.sloog.org

How much does it cost?

It is currently free to use. Just get it in-world and start tagging!

What is a tag?

It is just a keyword used to describe places or people. For instance, appropriate tags for a especially beautiful beach inside Second Life may be “beach sunset water swim surf awesome”.

How do I install it?

Go in-world to Mosi-Mosi offices and find the Sloog stand, just click on it to request a copy. A notecard will be given to you with some information on how to use it, and a pop-up dialog will appear offering you the Sloog HUD. Just accept, find the Sloog HUD in your inventory (it’s named “Sloog HUD version XX”, where XX can be any number), right click it and choose “Wear”. Alternatively, you can choose “Attach To HUD/Whatever” to place the user interface somewhere else in your screen.

A green window should appear now on the left-top corner of your screen, right below the main menu. Once you wear it, you will receive a welcome message thru your normal chat, it`s now 100% installed. Time to start slooooging!.

How do I use it?

This HUD is used both with your mouse and keyboard. Click any of the available buttons on the Sloog bar. After doing so, the HUD will give you step-by-step instructions on how to proceed.

The available buttons, from left to right, are:

  1. Tag place. Clicking this button will save your current location, asking you for tags relevant to that place.
  2. Search places. Click this button to search for previously saved places (both your places and everyone else’s).
  3. Tag avatar. Click this button to save an avatar as a contact. The HUD will ask you the avatar name, and what tags to apply to him/her.
  4. Search avatars. It allows you to search for tagged avatars (both your ones and everyone else’s).
  5. Privacy mode: Allows you to set your privacy mode so that your bookmarks are/aren’t listed in your Sloog page. This can be set independently for every bookmark. However, public mode is encouraged as it will help you find people with shared interests.
  6. Help. It opens up this document, containing helpx information.

Also, you can click on the Sloog logo to open you Sloog page in a web browser. There, you can list and manage your bookmarks. Please note this page won’t be ready until you tag at least one place or avatar.

After clicking any of the mentioned buttons the HUD will ask you to type something, example of this. If you want to search for shopping places, click the Search Places button. The HUD will ask you:

“Please write a search keyword and press ENTER” so all you have to do is type “shopping” and press ENTER.

Once results are found, you’ll get a list with teleport links, similar to this:

Your query returned the following results:

  1. Dare 2 Be Original Shopping Plaza ::: secondlife://Brannon/42/207
  2. A+ Shopping on St. Pomme de Terre ::: secondlife://Pamran/86/126
  3. Designers Paradise Shopping The best of SL in one lagfree place ::: secondlife://Hillcrest/124/90
  4. FRIDAYS GIRL and Bargain Basement, Ladies Shopping ::: secondlife://Bruda Plateau/170/136

Open your History window (or press Ctrl+H) and click whatever link you prefer.

In any case, you can chat with the HUD both on channel 0 (default), which everyone can read, or on channel 7, so that nearby avatars won’t notice you’re using Sloog if you wish so.

To use channel 7, type /7 before your search query, tags, etc… In example, /7 shopping

When I visit my Sloog user page, I get a “404 Page Not Found” error

This error is caused just because you haven’t saved any data yet. Your user page will be created the first time you tag a place.
So, go ahead and tag your first place using the “tag” command ( i.e. type /7 tag: sloog love )
